Martin's first job as an agent was in 1972 after having been involved for two years in organising entertainment at Reading University. His first agency work came at the Noel Gay Organisation which was attempting to create a Rock and Roll division. When this was aborted, he was invited to join the Chrysalis Group in their agency division where he stayed through all its various incarnations: Chrysalis Agency, Cowbell Agency and eventually, World Service Agency.
During this time, Martin's clients included some of the most seminal artists of the time including The Jam, The Cure, The Eurythmics, The Pretenders, Fine Young Cannibals, Bronski Beat, The Style Council, The Sex Pistols and Marc Almond - as well as other projects as diverse as a West End musical and a chamber orchestra.
Martin was the co-founder of Primary Talent International, one of the foremost contemporary music booking agencies in Europe, and ran the company as managing director from it’s formation in 1990 until he retired from the post in 2006 - during which time his clients included such acts as Peter Gabriel, The Cure, Paul Weller, Joseph Arthur, Roland Gift, Neneh Cherry, Todd Rundgren and The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Since then he has continued as a consultant to Primary, working mainly on the worldwide touring plans of The Cure and Peter Gabriel.
In addition to his role as an agent, Martin also created one of the world’s most significant industry forums, the International Live Music Conference (ILMC), and continued to supervise its activities for 25 years. He continues to be actively involved in the planning and organisation of the annual event, and retains the title of ‘Honorary Chairman’.
In 1999 Martin was inducted to the 'British Music Roll of Honour'. In the same year he was elected to the council of the Agents Association of Great Britain and was also invited to be a member of the government-led initiative, the Live Music Forum.
